Should I use my old ID with a star to Fly?

Why didn't they just make it so we get the REAL ID when our ID comes up for renewal? With this law, I have to get a real ID 2 months before my license expires because I'm going to have to fly 3 times between May and July. They've literally had 20 years to get their act together and they can't wait 2 months?

I rather drive.
Flying is an headach around holidays.
