I love riding my fixed gear bike. There's no good reason. It's irrational, I admit it. But it's just the most fun I have on a bike.

All these negative comments make me want to get my fixed gear out and ride it. And if the trend is really dead then that just means I'm ahead of the next time they're cool again :)

I am 66 been riding fixed for 8 years and brakeless for 4. I ride at least 100 miles a week and ride all year round in Michigan. I have one set up for winter with fenders and studded tires. I have on mountain bike with baskets and gears I use for a grocery getter, all other rides I do on my 4 fixies that I rotate.

Fixies make good shopping bikes ... especially if you're shopping for a geared bike.

Well thank you and the thoughtful commenters for this. Until now I thought a fixie was the same as a single speed bike, which is what I want, since I rarely change gears. I'd hate to have to pedal downhill - that's the big reward for climbing up, in my book

Sounds like a unicycle with two wheels

You JUST HAD to mention the "derailleur cables getting out of adjustment", as if it is such a common and relevant issue with modern mechanical groupsets. It just isn't.

I am surrounded by hills. Fixies are impractical. The day I get off a bike to ascend a hill, is the day I give up on cycling.

fixed gear was my first "drug" to cycling back in 2009. Even though i commute using vintage mtb everyday. But still, there is a soft spot for fixed gear in me.

Get a singlespeed and don't suffer the nonsense of a fixie - especially if you're commuting.

I can think of 10 reasons why i dont need a fixie

I tried liking it. I really wanted to. Even after getting the hang of it, it just seems so inneficient in terms of balancing yourself on the bike that I just can't justify it anymore. A freewheel lets you position your body anyway you please. But that's just me and my ride style, I prefer the liberty.

You don't. Just get a singlespeed bike.

Fixie is an outlived thing of the past. Why buy something inferior if today’s market offers such a wide variety of great options to choose from.

i started riding fixed this year at 53, i hated it at first, it's not my only bike, every ride is a challenge because it is hard to ride . but it has made me a better stronger rider, you need to massively read the road ahead and size up your situation, time your pedal strokes, lock your legs to break, you need to be on top of it always, to compare it with geared or freehub bikes is apples and chickens, most hate them because they are afraid of them, but like a wild horse you need to tame it. guiding my fixed through urban streeets and gravel tracks and making smooth progress is very rewarding, it's not all about getting from a to b. adjusting your speed with your legs is a wonderful connection and letting rip on a track bike with a strong stiff frame and direct drivetrain on city streets is smiley town

To the people who thinks fixed gear bikes are only a novelty. It's only a novelty because it became a trend and normal people started riding them to look cool. But for the real fixed gear riders, it's a very different feeling to ride without coast (even brakes sometimes). To know that you're in full control and being one with the bike is so fulfilling and adrenaline pumping. This video doesn't do it justice. Go watch some videos of professional crit racers and they will tell you otherwise :)
