I think it's not that people hate sequels but with companies spitting out sequel after sequel it creates this emptiness.

You forgot to mention that Illumination’s new movie is still making bank. As expected.

Also sonic 3 had Disney have a mental breakdown on twitter

The only way theaters will be saved is if they stop making me pay $18 for popcorn 😢

If sequels actually help expand the story, like Sonic 3, I think they're actually good.

If sequels are unnecessarily shoehorned in for the sake of it, like Moana 2, not so much.

Honestly its a big shame so many originals flop like i know The Wild Robot still made a lot and people are satisfied but personally i still think it was too low for a film like it

I feel like a mention of Sonic 3 would’ve helped with the video game adaptation side of Hollywood

Yay I'm You should rate all 2024 movies in a tier list for the end of the year.

I think sequels can be amazing if handled well

Edit i know this isn’t a lot of likes but this is the most I’ve ever gotten so thank you for liking this comment

I wish they could make it like Shrek 2 good for a sequel

It sucks how original films these days are almost always flops which shows movie studios that if they take risks it will amount to box office flops

Have you seen Sonic 3 as well? I think it’s an 8.5/10 for me the humour can be over the top but it’s an amazing recreation of what it was going for and the post credits scene was chefs kiss

Deadpool and Wolverine and Wicked are two of my favorite movies this year, DP&W three times, saw it in IMAX and Dolby. And like DP I saw Wicked three times, in an IMAX early screening, again in Dolby three days later, and again last night for the sing along version!

I Wish An Original Idea Would Make A Billion Dollars. And Half The Sequels Were Worse Than The Original. Some Of The Only Exceptions I Can Name At The Top Of My Head Were Inside Out, Deadpool And Sonic. Hopefully they put more effort in these

I think that as long as certain brands stay at least somewhat popular they aren’t ever going to go anywhere for example we haven’t had a new Scooby-Doo series that’s original since 2019 with be cool Scooby-Doo but people still care enough to the point where there’s multiple series planned one of which is in the works and the other a lot of people would really like to see. 2024 just showed that brands don’t need to constantly pump out projects to stay alive in some way and 2025 seems to have a lot of good movies coming like the new Superman, Avengers Doomsday and many many more.

This one was an interesting case, where people made hits because they wanted to see it and the people made flops because they were not interested

Not to mention that those two billion dollar movies Disney owned are the highest grossing of their respective demographics. (D&W highest R rated film and IO2 highest animated film)

Tbh, I think the reason that sequels are doing so well is due to the world building. For already existing series, the place, settings, characters etc are all there, they just have to make new things happen. But for new independent ones, there’s nothing there to help except inspiration.

People complain about companies only releasing sequels, but don’t go out to support original films 🤦🤦

Most of the issues with disneys 2023 flops (out side of controversy like with the little mermaid) was that almost every movie they released was either marketed incorrectly or barely marketed at all, Wish was marketed as the culmination of 100 years of Disneys animation, and then proceeded to fail at being a proper blend of the 3d and 2d styles, but if it had been marketed for its story I'm almost positive it would have performed drastically better, and i think most of disneys other flops for the year received similar treatment
