Quantum computing, so the fairy tale goes, is the next big thing in technology. News has popped up time and time again noting major advancements in the field, but the latest statement from company D-Wave had people scratching their heads. Are quantum computers really the next big thing? Who’s at the forefront of the field now? Let’s have a look.

Hihi, no matter how much Dr. Sabine denigrates herself as "grumpy, cranky, old YT woman", she can´t prevent, that her science updates and summaries are wonderful and important for an honest and spirited debating.🦄😉

Way back in ancient times - 1960’s - we had a sign over our analog lab that said: “the purpose of computing is insight, not numbers.” Seems apropos today as well.

0:54 “There are more intelligent people deciding what to do with your taxes” This is your best joke yet! 😂😂😂

The most useful application of quantum computers is generating news articles about quantum computers.

I’ve lived in Germany 30+ years, and ironic or subtle humour is not exactly a German trademark, although I hasten to add that there is some really excellent German humour. Dr. Sabine’s dry humour is uniquely good.

I think I'll just ignore quantum everything for 10 years and check back and see if anyone has done anything with it.

Sabine is the most interesting woman in the World …she answer questions about problems that people didn’t know they had until she told them

You have a unique talent for making challenging topics like quantum computing both understandable and interesting. Kudos to you for always making this field engaging!

Fact that the counter-claim was a post on LinkedIn - Internet's 'self-back-patting motivational post' repository - is the most hilarious part.

From 2010 to 2020, I watched the quantum computing theorists first harshly criticize D-Wave, and then many of them became worse than D-Wave when they got bit by the lure of funding. "Quantum annealing isn't universal, the gate-model is", they say. But both are just first steps of a very long journey.

HAHA! That's a good joke. 🤣

love these short format videos. Just enough information for me to retain and not feel like an idiot later after I've finished my lunch

I just hope the most useful application of quantum computers will be something other than breaking my encryption.

dpd = "dollars per digit" I'm going to use this metric is my next journal paper along with dpp = "dollars per plot"

The word accuracy is very key to all these quantum computing shenanigans. When they come up with these crazy numbers of a quantum computer being millions of times faster than a conventional supercomputer, they are comparing an estimation to a calculation. The super computer is performing a calculation with full accuracy, whereas the quantum computer is incapable of producing fully accurate results, which is an apples to oranges comparison. Good guesses can be very useful if the result can be quickly verified, however. If someone shows off a quantum computer that quickly guesses private encryption keys, then we will have a reason to be impressed.

I always loved optimization slug-fests . Whenever you think someone broke the record, a new optimization drops and it's a thousand times faster and then the little voice in your head that says 'I could probably do that ' takes a seat and gets a full course of humble pie.

"IBM's back, baby!" would have been slightly better wording :D

Presumably, higher Q-bit universal computers coming out should make the algorithm run faster, but I wonder if it'd be polynomially or expornentially faster per (noise improved) Q-bit.

In the UK, those of us that are old enough, remember Gerald Ratner. I think that was his name. Thank you for reminding me of him!

Absolutely agree with the competition advancing the field!!

Interesting. While taking a different approach — I've heard people complain that they did not even consider it a quantum approach — D-Wave has been consistent for many years.
