Karst sinkholes are unusual weather phenomena; heavy rains or droughts can cause the formation of sinkholes in the ground. Excessive or insufficient precipitation can activate existing sinkholes. Rainwater affects the level of groundwater, causing it to rise or fall over time. Water moves loose soil covering limestone caves, and limestone dissolves in acidic water. Over time, limestone formations can be pierced with voids and sinkholes. However, sinkholes often form due to human activity. For example, mines for salt extraction or mining operations weaken the ground. Artificial voids created by humans can eventually collapse. An example of such an incident is a case in China where old sewage pipes, leaking for a long time, led to a sinkhole, resulting in building collapses and loss of life. There are such things as sinkholes in Berezniki and Solikamsk, some of the most spectacular in the world.
