My son is almost 13 years old and has flat feet. We’ve met with two different podiatrists about the issue, and both of them said there’s nothing we can do but custom orthotics, as surgery at his age is heavily frowned upon. My son loves to play competitive sports but he’s obviously limited with his flat feet.

Is there anything available that we can explore to resolve this issue ?

How early can diagnosis be done? My 13 month old walks in a very similar way to this but it looks like he still has an arch.. will he grow out of this do you think?

This is so interesting. Some of my children have had “idiopathic” foot problems. Although I do not believe it is coincidental. My firstborn has always had flat feet, with very weak ankles and foot pain. My third born is the same.

My fourth, had metatarsal adductus (severe “pigeon toe”) which did self correct in time, though she still puts her weight on the outside of her feet.

My sixth was a toe walker and needed casting, and A.F.O.s to correct it. She is graduating from her A.F.O.s next week, but now has a bad case of flat foot which I hope the hospital will help her with.

My seventh was born with unilateral atypical clubfoot, and has had recurrent deformity despite excellent Ponsetti treatment and strict adherence to the protocol at home.

Only two of my seven children have normal feet with a normal gait.

Still, as far as the experts are concerned, the flat foot, pigeon toeing, toe walking and clubfoot are each idiopathic unrelated happenstances.

As a mother, I don’t buy that.

Watching your videos and other it seems like the patients with these most problems tend to be the ones that have feet that look like they go barefoot or wear sandals a lot. I wonder if wearing a good quality shoe like a sneakers with socks from around age 2 during the day, everyday would prevent some of these foot conditions. Case and point. I remember getting athletes foot a lot as a kid from going barefoot and wearing shoes without socks. I wear shoes now 12 to 14 hours a day even around these house and have for 30 years and never had a single issue with my feet. Know people that wear sandals a lot and go barefoot that have issues.

As various studies reveals that a baby has the ability to cure flat feet of first decade of his life. Just a question..can a 2 years old have gait problem if has flat feet.

Hi Dr. Jarman,
I have a question for you. My 18 months old boy has flat feet and we brought him to Hospital for Special Surgery for pediatric orthopedics. The orthopedist looked at the x-ray and confirmed my boy is having normal flexible flat feet, and no treatment is needed. flat feet will most likely been fixed by itself by age 6-7. I mentioned your video on Youtube and asked if the orthotic device will help. Orthopedist said it will not fix the flat feet but ONLY improve the functional, meaning providing better balance and walking ability. He prescribed the orthotic device and up to me to choose if I wanted to have it for my little boy. Do you have any suggestion for me? Is it the orthotic device necessary in my case?
