I would strongly recommend installing a motor emergency stop, which works when the skipper is further than approx 35ft from the receiving unit, e.g. MOB

I love autopilot!! We run long distances sometimes up to 65-80 or so miles one way. (weather permitting) Running like 20-25 knots, I can rig baits if it is a good weather day. We usually don't encounter another boat for about 25-40 mile stretch. Obviously, someone is always looking out and monitoring the helm. We only have a 24 WA with twin 150's. Trolling is also easier! Heading hold works well at those speeds. Besides the re-power 2 years ago, autopilot is the best investment we have made on our boat "Flanker". Autopilot is worth every penny.

Was anyone else jealous seeing his unit showing water temps in the low 70's? ☺

The new boat (2nd hand) which i purchased about 2 years ago had the auto pilot installed. I would never have thought to install one but now i wouldn't go with out. We do a lot of over night trips fishing on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and its the best thing....especially at night.

I have an autopilot on my whaler. I have a Simrad Ap44 autopilot controller hooked up to my Nac2 autopilot computer and my Nac2 VFR core pack. It is connected via Nmea 2k to my twin Simrad NSS9 evo3 chart plotters and my mercury vessel view 702. I absolutely love it. Anyone looking to upgrade their autopilot, I highly recommend this unit.

I have added a full garmin electronic package on a 32’ mainship including auto pilot and it is awesome. You can select a spot on the chart and route to. The autopilot will follow the route. Of course you must always review the selected course and make any adjustments but this is a very simple process. I find myself using the heading hold while on short trips, and the auto routing for destinations that I have never been to previously. Having the same brand electronics throughout my vessel has made operation and software updates extremely easy.

If you’re running long distances like we have to in the gulf to catch grouper, snapper and YFT it’s a must.

What’s up!? I love my autopilot. Although it doesn’t run a true as the Simrad you showed, it beats the heck out of holding on to the steering wheel for hours. I have the Lowrance Outboard.Pilot.

Great content.... Funny thing is I'm installing one for a customer at the moment. Wear a lanyard or get a radio controlled man over board system if your boating alone.

HELP! Please. Just got a simrad ap24 and have Garmin plotters. How do I tell the simrad to receive the Garmins waypoints. I keep getting a “no nav data” error. Everything is tied through a NMEA 2000 backbone

If you’re trolling offshore and have the caliber of crew I normally have with me.... it’s a must

We have a 2006 52 foot fly and it has autopilot but the autopilot doesn’t turn the boat but if you cross oceans it’s nice because you don’t have to make sure the boast at that angle all the time

Just re-powered with a pair of Yamahas and full Helm Master ex. Absolutely awesome system.
Love the auto pilot to get me to the reefs and wrecks while rigging up.

I have the Garmin reactor, with the GHC 20 controller. Easy install if you're mechanically inclined, but you need to buy or make the extra hydraulic lines from the T at the pump. This is a good system, but the controller has to be custom fine-tuned with the programmable "rudder gains" to your specific vessel. Compass placement must be installed above the waterline and centered as possible. I've installed 3 so far on different vessels, and each of them needed to be fine-tuned to work correctly. I fish solo most of the time, so having an autopilot is like having another person at the helm. You just have to pay extra attention when fighting a fish and don't get complacent about boat traffic.

I have an early Simrad that came on the boat when I purchased it (Boston Whaler 255 Conquest), at first I never used it but now use it all the time. It is not compatible with my new electronics (NMEA 2000 V NMEA 0183) so only use it in heading hold functionality.

Dang!
I actually flinched at the Windows BSOD-sound.

Boston Whaler Conquest 21 equipped with Raymarine Ev100 power networked to Raymarine a7s. Works well on Great Lakes but slow response time to turn port/starboard.

Do you have a kill switch attached to you? I had butterflies watching you filming and walking around the boat while in movement

I use the simrad auto pilot AP 44 VRF with nss evo 3S screens and the remote control module with optimus steering . Its worth noting that auto pilot doesn't work that well when moving greater than 55mph even with the sensitivity turned down. it struggles to maintain course and it starts to slalom slightly and it gets progressively worse. At slower speeds its works great.
