I still recall hearing this piece for the first time in the cinema. I was a teen and NOTHING in my cultural experience prepared me for the instantly blissful succession of notes building to a crescendo, with chills running up and down my spine and across my shoulders. This masterpiece belongs to the ages!

Back in elementary school music class I shouted "WOOOO!" when they played this song for when we were learning about the composer. I thought I was going to meet the nature boy but all I got was a trip to the principal's office. Smh 😣😣

Thank you Richard Strauss. When anyone listens to this great piece of music, we will grasp how much influence and power it really has. This great piece of music will last more than a millennium.

Going to see 2001 tonight in the theater where I first saw and heard it 56 years ago. My wife will be with me, and she has never experienced it in a theater. I was so blown away that I sat through a second showing, When I experienced that opening credit shot with this music, I knew that science fiction movies would never be the same. To this day, it sets the benchmark.

When Zarathustra was thirty years old, he left his home and the lake of his home, and went into the mountains. There he enjoyed his spirit and his solitude, and for ten years did not weary of it. But at last his heart changed, —and rising one morning with the rosy dawn, he went before the sun, and spake thus unto it:

Thou great star! What would be thy happiness if thou hadst not those for whom thou shinest!

For ten years hast thou climbed hither unto my cave: thou wouldst have wearied of thy light and of the journey, had it not been for me, mine eagle, and my serpent.

But we awaited thee every morning, took from thee thine overflow, and blessed thee for it.

Lo! I am weary of my wisdom, like the bee that hath gathered too much honey; I need hands outstretched to take it.

I would fain bestow and distribute, until the wise have once more become joyous in their folly, and the poor happy in their riches.

Therefore must I descend into the deep: as thou doest in the evening, when thou goest behind the sea, and givest light also to the nether-world, thou exuberant star!

Like thee must I go down, as men say, to whom I shall descend.

Bless me, then, thou tranquil eye, that canst behold even the greatest happiness without envy!

Bless the cup that is about to overflow, that the water may flow golden out of it, and carry everywhere the reflection of thy bliss!

Lo! This cup is again going to empty itself, and Zarathustra is again going to be a man.

Thus began Zarathustra's down-going.

One of the greatest and most iconic pieces of orchestra ever created, from 2001: A Space Odyssey, to Ric Flair's and Elvis Presley's Entrance theme, to being known as THE moon landing song, there are few songs that are as iconic as this one.

Have loved this piece since the first time I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey in college. When I was a volunteer usher at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, I worked the morning shift in Olympic Stadium. They would open each morning's announcements by playing this song. The sound system was flawless, and I got chills every single morning from it - a great way to start every day!
