How Denis Villeneuve got Dune 2021 right. In this video essay, I discuss why Denis Villeneuve got his adaptation of Dune right along with the elements that were needed to accomplish this in the new film. I discuss the incredible use and merging of visuals, sound and dialogue to capture the true essence of the character development and story in Dune.

Paul Atreides leads nomadic tribes in a battle to control the desert planet Arrakis. Dune is an upcoming epic science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve with a screenplay by Jon Spaihts, Villeneuve, and Eric Roth. The film is an international co-production of Canada, Hungary, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It is the first of a planned two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, which will cover roughly the first half of the book. The film stars an ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.

Hope you enjoy my video essay on why I believe Denis Villeneuve got Dune right. I'm also uploading my House Of Gucci review later today so look out for that.

I agree that this film was done correctly. There will always be those arguments that certain key elements were left out. A film has limitations of time. Denis balanced this perfectly in my opinion. I am a fan of the book and of Lynch’s film. I felt that Denis’ approach has brought this wonderful story to so many more people and created a whole new fan base. That is such an achievement in my eyes!

I saw that movie yet another time in *Imax* this morning . Good lord, it never gets old. It actually gets *better* !
Those grand scale unbelievable visuals and the bombastic music that trembles in your seat.
It's literally a once in a lifetime experience. Now Imagine Part 2 😶🔥

I totally agree with you on this subject. I had never read the book nor had I seen the David Lynch version. I chose to see this movie in IMAX after seeing your previous vids on this movie and was totally blown away. I watched it on HBO MAX twice more and bought the book. I am obsessed now and can’t stop marveling at the artistry of the movie and the amazing Zimmer creation of the music and sound effects. Also the cinematographer was genius. Thank you for your amazing coverage of this event!

Stephen McKinley Henderson described Villeneuve's movie perfectly: he turned an epic poem into a Haiku. It's impossible to make a 100% faithful adaptation of a book like DUNE. You need to capture the spirit and turni it into a visual experience. I had my complaints about the way some characters are developed in the movie, still have (Yueh, Piter, Thufir), but after rewatching the movie a few times I just understand this is Denis Villeneuve's vision, not mine, it is what it is, and it's good movie. I'm eager to watch part 2 (and 3, hopefully...).

You are right - the author did what I hoped to see once in my life - to literally dive into the world of Dune, breathe the atmosphere of those deserts, feel the hearts and souls of fremen, see the grandeur of Paul Moadib and his father, shout battle cries with their armies... The second part will probably be even better "flight above the desert" in that universe of Dune...

Yes, completely agree. The film was brilliant :) I loved the sound work (almost used as a narrative voice in the film). One other thing I noticed was the lighting ... there's none of the "flatness" one sees in other sci fi films, where green screen is used badly -- that is where shadows on the face are not cast etc. Sorry that was boring (!) but my point is he made a film that at every point was just superb. No detail left unconsidered. Epic :)

I will never forgive him for excluding the line: "Mood is for cattle and loveplay.". 😉

Yes he did get it right.
He did what many said couldn't be done.
He gave us a film that both devoted fans and general audiences enjoyed.
As well as one that stands up to multiple repeated viewings.
The Oscars were made to be given to such feats of filmmaking.

Thank for a great video. Most all the reasons you covered, closely parallel my own feelings on Denis Villeneuve’s epic achievement.
After seeing the film in cinemas (which I think everyone should do) I’ve been taking my copy of Dune and comparing the original passages to the film.

Before everyone comes at me, realize this, I read Dune before Lynch’s version, and I loved it(the book!) Still do!
In contrasting the film with the book, I found that: the cinematic *improved* on every scene by distilling them to their *absolute essentials*.
One aspect I couldn’t predict was the shear number of viewers, new to the Dune universe, who have been buying Dune books after seeing it in cinemas! Wonderful!

Dune would have been an exposition nightmare if he'd tried to cram all the info in as dialogue.

The only thing I didn’t love was how conflicted Paul is with his path. And how he all the sudden seems to embrace it at the end. I think killing Jamis should’ve been more of a internal struggle for him.

Spoiler bit: When Kynes was killed it was water not blood. Just amazing film-making.

I think Denis’s adaptation is already a masterpiece and will long stand the test of time as the best adaptation of the source material. I’ve only a few minor nitpicks:
- Leaving out that a crysknife must draw blood before being resheathed and is one of the tests Jessica intuitively passes with the new Shadout Maipes
- The orbital bombs slowing down to penetrate the city shields was cool but undercut the actual effectiveness of shields, where in the book the traitor Dr Yueh has to disable the city shields to make the Harkonnen attack possible. Upon reflection maybe the city shields were down and they were just showing how the shields of Atreides own military ships were defeated but I feel it gets misunderstood as the attack defeating the city’s shields and I can’t remember if the city shields are specifically referenced or shown to be disabled in the movie which is a critical plot point.
- Furthermore to the use of shields is the Harkonnen’s use of lasguns in the movie in respect to the shields of Idaho’s thopter as he escapes and again against a potential personal shield of Paul or his mother when they’re cutting open the door. If either had contacted the shields the Harkonnens would have wiped themselves out in a resulting nuclear explosion that in lore could originate either at the shield location or the origin of the laser beam itself.
- I felt the Harkonnens themselves were a little underdone, they felt more threatening in the trailers with now obviously different dubbed or edited dialogue which gave me goosebumps at the time but where it was actually used in the movie was less impactful.

Honestly the only thing I would change would be adding the dinner scene on Arrakis back in. I think it would pave it well and make it feel less like they arrived and then immediately all died
