Years and years ago it was commonplace for cat owners to declaw their house cats. They did this to save their furniture. The shredded furniture may make you want to declaw your cat, but we believe that is simply because you don't understand what declawing is.

Recently had a stray cat basically living on our porch outside for the past 2-3 months and when it got cold out recently she just came in on her own, when I went to check her nails and see how well she’d do with nail trimming (I have other cats and I regularly trim their nails) I found out her front feet were declawed (I nearly cried), we’re hoping she’s someone’s lost cat (also planning on getting her checked for a chip sometime after the holidays) and not one that was dumped after getting declawed (there are quite a few cats and kittens that get dumped in the town I live in)

I hate cats, we dont mesh, them and I, but this is just cruelty. I thought declawing was the process of the vet removing the "nail", not the removal of limbs.

Wow I never knew this. I just got my 1st cute kitten and thought about having it done, but wow that's terrible. I had circumcision done as an adult leaving me with PTSD and nightly nightmares, this seems like that. Why the eff is it even allowed? Poor cats.

My cat uses all my furniture for scratching posts and I don't give a shit if he does or not. I would never have him declawed. That's just evil!

I don’t care about my cat scratching SHIT. I don’t know why people are so stupid just not buying a scratch post that’s probably $12.

I get both sides of the argument, and realize many vets won't do the procedure, but have to weigh in. We have declawed literally all of our cats I have ever had since growing up and zero behavioral changes whatsoever and seemingly minimal pain. No changes in how they walk, play, jump, interact with humans, or interact with other cats. Vet says to make sure they aren't jumping off of things for a period of time after, but most ended up doing just that 24-48 hours later despite our best efforts. They seem in far less discomfort than I keep hearing about.

My cats have also all lived until 17+ and are smothered in love, get the best care, eat healthy diets, and are as happy and energetic (and cuddly/loving) as can be.

No destroyed furniture or constant bodily injury. A third of them have been indoor/outdoor cats and can hunt and defend themselves just fine.

I think this declawing thing being animal cruelty is wildly, wildly overblown. Either that or we have just been lucky every single time so far.

People who declaw is simply because they're poor and not really love their cat. 2 simple reason

Can we just be like European countries and make it 100% illegal everywhere? It's gross, evil, BARBARIC mutilation.

If you want a pet, you rearrange YOUR LIFE to fit them into it, you do NOT rearrange the animal to fit into your life.

Pets are just a chapter or so in our lives, we are their entire book. Please honor that.

Adopt, don't shop. The best animals are the ones who are given a second chance.
