People assume China's premier, Li Qiang, is the country's second most powerful man. But he is not. Chinese leader Xi Jinping has made Li the weakest Chinese premier ever. The recent State Institutional Reforms further strengthened the Party's control and weakened State Council's role. Xi has installed a CCP leader, a politburo standing committee member, in critical positions, making him the second most powerful man in China. But Xi's ultimate goal may be to give himself a promotion one day.

On women rising in politics, by way of contrast in Taiwan in the last elections, two-thirds of female candidates won vs only half of male candidates, and this has been the trend for awhile now. The president is a woman, as are 10 of 22 regional heads of government, 42% of the legislature and nearly 40% of councillors around the country. If trends continue parity will be achieved over the next couple of election cycles.
