You totally captured how HORRIBLE that spring snow storm was. Loved the typewriter bits too, that was cool. I remember it took me FOREVER to figure out how to properly do slow motion back in the day. I wish I had this video then!

Cinematic is such a broad term. I think a lot of people will think its the high contrast "LUTy" look. After doing a lot of my own work I think that the things that really make something look cinematic are understanding of framing (not just ruler of thirds, Roger Deakins uses things like symmetry and guiding lines to make you look in a certain point of the frame), Quality of light and a bit of post work in coloring to make the image "pop." Its a lot of things that go into it. Does that answer your question? ;)

Great vid Mark! Loved the slo-mo B-roll. I'm starting to dabble into some content creation avenues myself (nothing posted yet, just getting projects together) and was wondering how long it takes you to put together a video like this? Specifically breaking it into Planning, Production and Post. Love your work. Keep it coming!

Really beautiful shots and locations there Mark and you made me laugh! I always prefer doing slow-motion in my Sony cameras as they can natively store the slowed frames in camera using a few internal settings. It can be a little fiddly (APS-C crop, need to change about 4/5 settings) but at least it saves me time in the edit. All that being said, I recently did all my shooting on my 6Dmkii in Brisbane and it worked fine, but I was shooting so much I generally didn't shoot slow mo (though I wish I did!).

As far as cinematic, I agree with some others here, it's not one thing, but on 'youtube' it can be seen as slow-motion coupled with colour grading that makes the image pop in one way or another - or that's what I notice on youtube more often than not :D

Oh man that snow... That was a great breakdown of slow motion and again your editing is next level good. Curious if it will still be snowing in June...

Like for this educational video. First time someone actually explained the math behind the slow motion here on YouTube.
Bonus like for having that gorgeous Takumar inside 😁

Hey Mark! Just stumbled upon your channel from Matt Haapoja's channel. Really dig your videos...this was an awesome and unique tutorial. Great work on this. I shoot in 120 quite a bit on my Sony a6500, and I don't typically use optical flow when I slow down my footage. What does that do the clip?

Great reminders for sure! To me cinematic is is an overall feeling that consumes me into a segment. So, it can be one thing, for example color or it can be a mashup of things that give me this feeling, such as music + shot angles/sequence + narrative. Whatever provides me with that leaned in moment can provide me with a cinematic experience.

Great video, and a very good question, which I won't attempt to answer because I need to think about that!

I didn't understand why people were shooting in 60p in some situations over 120p but this explained it perfectly thanks!

Great video Mark. This is exactly the issue I’m struggling to wrap my head around right now. I’ve only made six or seven clips - in iMovie - so I have a long way to go. This type of information is immensely helpful. Thanks. BTW I’m soooo with you regarding the lingering white menace..

Very helpful information.👍🏼 For me what makes good cinematic footage is proper color grading, slow motion and buttery smooth bokeh.

Sadly my camcorder doesn't have the ability to change frame rate but I do have 120 shutter speed.
