Disasters have the potential to cause short- and long-term effects on the psychological functioning, emotional adjustment, health, and developmental trajectory of children. In this webinar, you will learn about the adjustment difficulties in children in the aftermath of a disaster to how to promote effective coping strategies to mitigate the impact of a disaster as well as any associated bereavement and secondary stresses. We will also highlight the need for local and state governments to include in disaster planning the mental health needs of children and their caregivers. You will also learn about Florida State University’s response to Hurricane Michael, which struck the Florida Panhandle in October 2018.

This would have been incredibly useful for Florida to implement for Hurricanes Charley/Frances/Jeanne/Ivan in the 2004 season. Glad to see progress now.

Disaster plans can't be stressed enough for everyone, from big business to the household. Florida is hit in some level each year by hurricanes and lives are constantly uprooted. Preemptively decreasing the chaos should always be a focus.
