Herod was a ruler, a king. People bowed before him and there would be fear among people to speak against or go against him. He was an authority. However, in the gospel, we see that Herod was a fearful man. He was not bold. We see Herod’s many fears. First of all, when John the Baptist tells him, ‘It is not lawful to keep your brother’s wife,’ he wanted him to be put to death, but he feared the crowd. Herod also feared his so-called wife Herodias, and because of that fear, he puts John the Baptist in prison for her sake. Herod has also fear of his respect and reputation. That’s why, he gets John the Baptist beheaded because he had promised Herodias’ daughter who danced before the guests whatever she asked for. Why Herod has these fears? Basically, it is the fear of truth. He has a fear of lawlessness and lies. He was restless and was never at peace because he was living a false life. On the other hand, John the Baptist was fearless because he stood for truth. He lived a genuine life and that gave him the courage to speak the truth. He met with a sad yet glorious fate; he was killed. This is the immense price of proclaiming the truth. In fact, it was the fear of Herod, that killed him.
Today let us try to reflect and see – which kind of life are we living. Is it like Herod or John the Baptist? Are we living in fear or are we living at peace? Is there peace and serenity within in spite of external turmoil and disturbances? We also need to reflect on whether we stand for truth and justice. Even in the world today, we see a lot of injustice, racism, indifference, violence, etc. Are we able to speak the truth? Do we become the voice of the voiceless?
