One passenger dies after severe turbulence on board Singapore Airlines flight

Even when the seatbelt sign turns off, I always keep mine on. I have been in a serious "drop" in altitude before. Thankfully we were all buckled in. Condolences to the family of the deceased gentleman, and speedy recovery to others injured.

I had a similar experience on a flight from Honolulu to Vancouver BC. The Western Airlines flight lost about 1000feet in a matter of seconds while the flight attendants were serving food trays. No one was injured but it shocked almost every one how suddenly it occurred.

Wear your seatbelts when seated….very simple. The flight attendant tells you that before takeoff.

Satellite imagery at the time and location of the turbulence encounter shows significant convective weather (Thunderstorms). This might turn out to be pilot error if the pilots did not turn on the seatbelt signs and advise the flight attendants and passengers to be seated with seatbelts fastened securely.

They need a temperature threshold to view the turbulent atmosphere and how it is moving. If we could put a sensor on every airplane it might be a leeway towards getting a better idea of how to avoid this problem.
