Pegasus, or “Pegasos” in the original Greek, was a winged horse from Greek Mythology. It is said that Pegasus was born of the sea-god Poseidon and the beautiful Medusa. The liaison between Poseidon and Medusa made the goddess Athena angry, and so Athena cursed Medusa to be ugly and deadly. When the hero Perseus killed Medusa by chopping off her head, Pegasus sprang from her neck. Thanks to the Disney movie Hercules released in 1997, many people believe Pegasus was Hercules’ trusty companion. However, according to the myth, Pegasus had nothing to do with that demigod. Instead, Pegasus was the steed for the Greek hero Bellerophon, who tamed the horse with a golden bridle gifted by Athena.

According to legend, Bellerophon later became king of Corinth. This is why the image of Pegasus appears on many coins of Corinth and her colonies. Pegasus coins were made of bronze, silver, and other metals, and frequently featured the goddess Athena on the obverse. Some of the ancient Pegasus coins have dated as far back as 500 B.C.E! Other Pegasus coins have been linked to the ancient cities of Syracuse, Sicily, and Anatolia.

Always love the obverse of these coins...the rest, not so much.
