After the death of Carolus in Norway the soldier had to march home over the high mountains separating the 2 countries in wintertime. Snowstorm and severe cold happened and the famished, out-worn soldiers died in thousands and thousands upon that march over the mountains home. The emphasis Joakim puts on those words Aldrig återvända- Never to return, is chilling.

You should devinetly listen to the swedish Version of the song with Englisch Lyrics pulled up. The songs have different meaning and potray the war even better in my opinion.

I think it's a very depressing, hopeless song that again gets under your skin a lot.
The song is sung only in Swedish, as far as I know. But you understand the drama and hopelessness anyway.

There are several factors to the end of Sweden as a great power in Europe.
Karl XII and his never-ending wars was a constant drain on manpower.
And of course, in the field the men died from battle and sickness (WWII was the first time in history where more soldiers died from combat vs disease), but it's also important to note that in addition there was an outbreak of the Plague in Sweden in 1710.
That's what the line "Dödens år, satt sitt spår" (The year of death, left its mark) refers to.
Stockholm was hit particularly hard and went from a population of around 60K to 30K.
And still the king wanted more men for the army.

It's partially why Karl XII is still seen as both a good king and a bad king depending on which swede you talk to.

There is no doubt that he was a very good strategist and tactician, that he was personally courageous, steady under fire and that he was willing to endure the same conditions as his soldiers.

Yet his wars, which didn't stop even when Sweden was hit by plague, also contributed to bleeding the country dry of people.
At the time of his death, for all that his people were still for the most part very loyal to the king, the nation had nothing left to give.

It would take a long time for Sweden to recover it's population (also partially due to some bad years with many dying from starvation to be fair), and as the song says, Sweden would never again become a great power in Europe.

This song tell about the total devastation of not only the army, but also the heart and soul of each carolean soldier. I can only imagine how the loss of their king made a burden to the harsh march back to Sweden.

I love the epic sound of this song, Joakim really uses the orchestral parts to set the stage and theme of the song. The death of Carolus Rex (Charles XII) marked the end of the Swedish Empire. Even through WW2, as many soldiers died from disease and other non-combat related causes than wounds. Great reaction as always. Thanks for sharing.

This song or Carolus rex is my favourite, especially when I'm swedish and understand the lyrics it just gets so much better. Love the reaction and your commentary!

The official lyric video is cool but can't beat Piscator's fan made lyric video. He has the english translation showing in the video as well as the female choir in the end.

One Sabaton song I recommend is 'Attero Dominatus', I think you'd enjoy it if you've been enjoying all the other songs. I did binge through the other 72 Sabaton vids you've done and haven't seen that song on your list yet so I thought I'd throw a recommendation out.

I would say it was worth it, it was a defensiv war against a triple alliance and some others that helped. This is from The Great northern war.

For me the quality was better because of you looking up the lyrics so that you can also understand, great reaction as always. 👍

Rough translation.

Messenger came a cold winter night
Carolus no longer lives (homewards, brothers)
Over mountains, through freezing cold
They walk with a heavy heart (returning)

Death awaits Armfeldt and his men
Death, the king's men turn homeward again

Kinsmen, brothers, our great era is over
Our kingdom is bleeding, the banner set ablaze
Never, never, never to return
The Swedish empire to its end

Ambition and strict religion
Drove the swede in to war (tough times)
For his country he took up arms
One life for the good of the kingdom (Caroliner)

War, given all we were able to
War, the years of death has left its mark, we endure

Kinsmen, brothers, our great era is over
Our kingdom is bleeding, the banner set ablaze
Never, never, never to return
The Swedish empire to its end

Kinsmen, brothers (they were taken for granted, feats of life)
our great era is over (who let it happen? empire to its end)
Our kingdom is bleeding (they were taken for granted, feats of life)
the banner set ablaze (who let it happen? empire to its end)
Never, never (they were taken for granted, feats of life, who let it happen?)
never to return (empire to its end, they were taken for granted, feats of life)
The Swedish empire (who let it happen?) to its end

Hope it helps 😁

The reaction was good! I think it was quite up to the quality so no need to worry about it

I might be wrong (and I don't speak Swedish) but I believe that the English name of this song is "Empire in ruins".

For future reference if you want good English translations you can find them on Duke of Txtspeak's channel. The Swedish versions of the songs are a lot better and that'll help you understand the lyrics

What I find incredibly sad, listening to the story on their history videos, when the Swedish army lost their king, they didn't go to treat with the Russians and tell them of their retreat. They didn't send anyone to try and entreat with them and negotiate for supplies, or a ceasefire, or anything. They didn't wait out the winter. They just turned around and as far as the Russians were aware, the Swedish army retreated suddenly without notice. For fear or for pride, they lost more men than they might have, if they had done any of those things. But then, the band recommend people learn the lyrics to take the meaning into themselves to understand it better, so who knows.

Svea (pronounced S-v-ee-a) is an old name for Sweden
