One of the most notorious issues in drum programming is what we call the "machine gun effect", where triggering the same sample repeatedly produces a lifeless, robotic quality that quickly becomes tiring on the ear.

Getting round this problem with typical flair and ingenuity is our man in the production field, Flying Soulo, who shows you how to layer up samples and trigger them with Reason's Alligator device to produce natural, exciting drum patterns that burst with energy.

Take it away Mr. Soulo!

This is the type of creative process I like to see. I never would have thought of this.

Natural doesn't mean random. Randomness in producing is the worst of options. Music is a painting and as a painter one makes thoughtful soundscapes rather than chaotic mixtures of shapes. Every alternation ought to be prethought and controlled.
