Caledonia has been forced to cancel a prominent holiday event after vandals destroyed a community lights display.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that the "Lights Along the Grand" Light Up Ceremony at Kinsmen Park must be cancelled tonight due to extreme vandalism and theft,” said the Caledonia Business Improvement Area (BIA) in a post on its Facebook page.
The free event was set to take place Thursday night and featured several light displays, a photo/selfie area and new interactive fun zones.
When volunteers attended the park during the day on Thursday, they discovered the wires had been cut on all of the tree displays as well as the other light displays in the area. The power supply for the lights show that took roughly 40 volunteers nearly a year to set up was also damaged.
“The Caledonia Community Foundation, Special Projects, Volunteers, and financial contributors have put countless hours into planning, growing, and installing the light display,” said Caledonia BIA. “In one night, vandals destroyed years of work. This type of senseless and destructive behaviour is not the Caledonia way.”
A GoFundMe page that was previously set up in 2019 to collect donations to help improve the lights show every year and install adequate hydro throughout Kinsmen Park has now increased its goal to cover the cost of repairing the lights.
“Our beautiful displays have been severely damaged by vandals,” wrote organizer Julie Henning on the fundraising page. “Although we are heartbroken, we love that our community is trying to help us!”
The Caledonia BIA is asking anyone who may have information regarding the vandalism to contact Crime Stoppers.
