BMW Gear Shift Assist Pro Review

Since first trying a quickshifter on the Panigale 899 and then having fitted one to the Street Triple R it was only a matter of time until the BMW got the same treatment....but "Gear Shift Assist Pro" is much more then a common or garden up shifter....

I'm now on that Twitter thing! Join me @MissendenFlyer

I use the following equipment to record and edit my VLOGs:-

My current motorcyles are:-
Honda CRF250L
Triumph Street Triple R
BMW R1200GS
Ducati 899 Panigale

I find that the BMW's Gear Assist Pro on my 2017 GS does perfect downshifts, including into first, but when going up through the gears it is not that smooth unless I am 'giving it the beans'. I have learnt that when nonchalantly going up through the gears it is best to just throttle back a hint on each up shift. The combination of the Assist Pro cutting the ignition and me cutting the fuel makes for perfect gear changes. Hey Ho.

7000 miles on the 2018 K1600B with Assist Pro, great addition to the bike. No more helmet banging with shifting.

I tried it on the S1000XR and really like it. I've had a couple of quick-shifters on a K1300S and S1000RR, but never tried the down-shift system until now. And you're right, it's great. I don't feel you have to make particularly firm upshifts, but the engine does need to be accelerating and not cruising or rolling off to get the smoothest shifts.

I have to say, on my 2016, now with a grand total of 2500kms, -my replacement R1200GS- is still running in. The Quick Shift was never used by the 1st owner I can feel. Many bikers order it, but are frightened to use it. First few times can put you off!… False all sorts. Touch the clutch in QS, or make the wrong throttle action and things go rather wrong. I learned but it did confuse me (and the computer!) and I’m not sure the gearbox loved me either! Once you’ve got the idea, it’s great to work with. I never QS into 1st or out of it. I use QS for 2 - 6, and VV.
Anyway, round 2, I’m running that bit in now too, very gently. It’s actually smoother than my late 2017. Yes, the blipping throttle action on going down gear, does raise a smile. It’s a very quick double de clutch! LoL. What an old fashioned term. I think we modernise that by ‘blipping the throttle’, same as you would do on a fully manual bike! Love it, QS, as do I love Cruise, Rain Mode, Amazing GPS to balance out the unreadable clocks (accept the tachomoter!) but I like the dash. Hill Start Assist is also really great! & all those modes. The Ultimate Motorcycle has been made. How can it be improved on now?

Got this on the RT - the missus loves the up changes as a passenger. She says the acceleration is almost seamless (maybe I'm just crap at manual changes lol)

This was very helpful to see your camera on the shifter. Thank you!

Naive Bandit ('99) here. I hardly ever use the clutch beyond second. So now I wonder why this assist thing even exists? I've never driven a shaft. Is it maybe related to tighter engagement of shaft vs. chain transmission?

So downshifting should be done on idle and up shifting should be done under load? max load, medium, low...? Is it a problem if i release the throttle when up shifting?

Did you hear anything about the gear shift assist pro being better when fitted at the factory instead putting it on later after a few years?

How's the quickshifter holding up, have you had any issues with it? Heard of some people having problems?

My Honda NC750 has DCT and no clutch. Presumably on BMW you need to pull in clutch lever when stationary and in first gear? Thanks. Jon

Hi, MF Just wondering usually you mention rough costs of your upgrades how much did it cost you to get the assist pro added after purchase? Cheers

I have a question regarding the down shifting. Do you have to roll off the throttle completely before down shifting ?

Do you keep the ball of your foot on the foot peg when you riding?
