You’re Not Ugly. You’re Just Not Filtered

This month I received...

What if the face you’re chasing… was never real to begin with? From TikTok filters to AI-generated beauty rankings, we’re being sold a lie: that there’s one perfect face, and that perfection can be achieved through the right tweak, the right filler, or the right filter. In this video, we’re diving deep into how artificial intelligence, facial recognition technology, and algorithm-driven platforms are quietly reshaping our perception of beauty—and ultimately deciding which faces get rewarded, and which ones get left behind.

From the ancient Greek Golden Ratio to the plastic surgery boom of old Hollywood, we’ve always tried to define beauty through symmetry, proportion, and control. But now, in the age of AI, beauty isn’t evolving naturally—it’s being engineered. The Instagram Face, the TikTok glow-up, the AI filter that erases your pores and sharpens your jawline—these aren’t just harmless trends. They’re symptoms of a deeper shift: one where beauty becomes standardized, optimized, and frighteningly homogenous.

So what happens when millions of us start chasing the same face? What does it mean when people bring filtered selfies to plastic surgeons? Or when facial recognition software quietly rewards Eurocentric features? This video explores the cultural, technological, and historical roots of the “perfect face” ideal—and why now, more than ever, we need to question who’s behind it.

Let me know in the comments: have you ever felt like your unfiltered face wasn’t enough? Do you think we’re losing individuality in the age of algorithmic beauty? Let’s talk about it.

A woman with surgically reconstructed face is mathematically perfect. What a coincidence.

Instead of these parents buying their kids plastic surgery at a young age that should be paying for mental health counseling

I know Uglies didn't do so well but we need a psychological thriller about society's pressure to look beautiful

Laura, could you make a video about men's beauty industry and skin care for men, that is growing lately? Maybe you could talk about the similarities and differences between both genres in beauty industry.

Eugenics. This is eugenics and extends to unmitigated covid, mass incarceration, ignored increasing infant/maternal mortality, decreasing life expectancy, systemic harm to elderly and people with disabilities. We now have 80 cop city megastructures in 47 of 50 states launched in last 4 years. Eugenics is the law of the land.

Dear Laura Jane, chapeau to your knowledge. I am a big fan of 19. century and you have mastered it perfectly! I think, that the "golden ratio" comes from Mother Nature, you know, as we are looking sublimally for a parter to have kids with (women, men). You are wonderful. Thank you so much for your wisdom.
