In this tutorial we'll be having a look at

In this tutorial we'll be going over how you can join separate paths together so that they become a single path. This is accomplished using the "Join Nodes" setting for the Edit Paths By Nodes tool, which allows us to merge nodes together.

Nothing like a new Inkscape video in 2023. Thanks so much!

Thanks, very clear explanation :) I use this tool often.
Shift+J is a standard shortcut for it, and if you hover over one of the nodes while pressing the shortcut, node's position will be preserved and the second node will be moved all the way instead.
Also it's worth noting that only end nodes of open paths can be joined this way, took me a while to realize this.

Thanks. All these "basics" can be baffling if you're a newbie like me. Your videos are so helpful.

I'm coming back here to thank you for this tutorial. I'm making a vectorart right now and this problem has happened a few times during the process and, if it weren't for this video, I would have had to do a long process to get it fixed. thank you Nick <3

1:54 this has happened to me several times. to solve it I would close the two separate paths and then go to Path > Union. but the way you taught it is easier

How do I do the opposite, separate the paths into 2 pieces but maintain the original position

two questions
1. are there hotkeys for these 2 actions? I couldn't find them in the preferences.
2. when you have 1 path selected, you can continue drawing it using the pen/bezier tool. I've seen some people connect 2 separate paths using the pen bezier tool in some tuts but I didn't manage to do it myself. every time I have 2 separate paths selected, and I press b for the tool, they both get deselected. how can I join 2 paths using the tool?

I have circle converted to a path, cut away a segment (resulting in an open circle), and want to attach lines leading away from the opening. When I now combine the end node of a line with one of the end nodes of the open circle, I weirdly get a filled out circle, with the area of the filling going up to the other end of line (which I did not include in the end point combining). WTF? Who can help?
