Dana does caricatures of celebrities, not impressions. This format is no good for him. He needs to be able to exaggerate mannerisms in equally exaggerated situations. Like Will Farrell, who didn't do a good Bush Jr impression, it isn't about being "spot-on" with mimicry; it's about exaggerating the persona and being damn funny in the process.

I've just noticed Dana kinda looks like Sam Rockwell.

Dana is a class act. In the late 1980's, I was at a Todd Rundgren concert, when a couple of seats opened up near the stage, and my friend and I decided someone should use them. Jon Lovitz was on stage singing a funny song with Todd. About 20 minutes later, I hear some whispering behind me, and see Jon and Dana standing in the aisle. I realized that we'd stolen their seats. I asked if that was the case. Dana said, "Don't worry. We can stay here." Of course, we gave them their seats, but they weren't even remotely angry. Very cool.

Dana Carvey comes from a different time and a different "school" of impressionism, before guys like Frank Caliendo started popping up along with hundreds of people on YouTube who can do unbelievable mimicry. Carvey was gold on SNL and still is pretty funny in his stand-up because he's able to capture a certain quirkiness about a celebrity and then somehow turn that into a new character. It's like Chevy Chase's take on Gerald Ford, which was even more extreme because he didn't even TRY to look or sound like him, but it was a brilliant character and brilliant satire from Chevy and the writers. Dana's Bush Sr barely resembles the actual Bush and basically the extent of the similarity is that he just exaggerates a couple mannerisms, but is an amazing character. I would rather impersonate HIS version of Bush than to try to actually do the real one. Same with his Ross Perot, Paul McCartney, George Michael, Tom Brokaw, John McLaughlin, Johnny Carson, Mickey Rooney. His Obama impression is really funny to me, the Trump stuff I've seen him do has been good. They're not perfect imitations but are instead hilarious Bizarro Land caricatures of those people.

It was never the kind of thing with him where you could close your eyes and be like "Wow it's like they're right there!" which is why this video sucks and why he sucks in it. This kind of bite-sized thing isn't good for characters, it's just to show off perfect, instantly recognizable imitations.

His Cary Grant reminded me of Tony Curtis in "Some like it Hot" when he pretends to be the millionaire for Sugar.

Carvey's impressions are more caricature than accurate. He kind of hides (for lack of a better term) behind exaggeration. Ross Marquand is masterful. He does the voices flawlessly but really sells it with mannerism and nuanced body language.

They were all super exaggerated. He basically did caricatures of the people he was doing impressions of.

The thumbnail is a good enough Owen Wilson impression on its own

so good that you can rewind and repeat sections of a video on youtube, otherwise most of this would have flown right past me

Ross Marquand was much better, to be fair. But he had more relatable character/moments.
