A rescue effort has failed to save eight pilot whales which had become stranded on New Zealand's South island. The whales had beached themselves on Tuesday and were initially refloated the next day. However, they were then found stuck again at Golden Bay the following day. The Department of Conservation decided to shoot the animals to avoid further suffering. The area is known to be one of the worst in the world for whales to get beached, with at least 250 pilot whales dying there in the last five years, New Zealand media said. Report by Ashley Fudge.
