The history of Chevrolet Suburban

"Chevrolet didn’t trademark the name “Suburban” when it introduced the industry’s first steel-bodied, eight-passenger truck-based wagon back in 1935. Other marques subsequently used the term, and it didn’t officially become General Motors’ until 10 years after Plymouth discontinued its Suburban station wagon in 1978. Now, 83 years on, the Suburban is the longest-running nameplate in automotive history and is attached to the go-to hauler for people with big families and big needs. With a new Chevy Silverado just unveiled, a 12th-generation Suburban is imminent.

Chevrolet first applied the name to a $675 (about $12,000 in 2017 dollars) depot hack, a basic truck used to ferry passengers and luggage to and from train stations and ship terminals. A heater and rear bumper were notable options, but the innovation came in using steel rather than wood for the body, which now boasted an enclosed cabin. As amenities increased, mainstream buyers followed. The Suburban now starts above $50,000, and Americans bought nearly 60,000 last year."

🚙 I worked at one of the main plants where these were manufactured, Flint Truck Assembly, from 1977 through 1995, before accepting another position at GM's Service and Parts Division. These were truly awesome, highly respected vehicles, way ahead of their time. They could easily outlast regular cars of the same period. Before the Escalade, these were often referred to as the "Texas Cadillac". While these made fantastic passenger vehicles (4X4 or RWD), they also had a wide commercial, industrial and military success.

It was the best imported family car in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and helped stimulate local tourism. Thank you, General Motors. They provided a car that will remain in people's hearts.

I love Suburbans, I've had 5 in the last 27 years and still have 3. Two 1999s and one 1997. The 97 I have had for 20 years come Nov. Had 103k on it when we bought it and now at 320k it is still going. One 99 we have had 8 years almost and is at 157k and the other 99 we bought in April this year and is at 186k. I have had great luck with them

GMC also sold Suburbans, until its version was renamed the Yukon XL.

2011 to 2013 are the best years. 4th Generation all aluminum LS V8s, 5 link rear suspension, ifs, twin electric radiator fans, four wheel disc brakes, 6 speed transmissions with low first gear ratio and rack pinion steering. Chevy finally fixed everything and then screwed it up again in 2014 with the LT motor.
