You've seen these pitching velocity medicine ball drills before in videos online, but in this video Brent Pourciau of Top Velocity breaks them down and talks about how the Top Velocity Med Ball Drills are helping pitchers gain velocity across the country!

Top Velocity Med Ball Drills Explained

The 3x Med Ball Throws as they are called, require a 2 lbs medicine ball. These med ball drills are broken down into two series: The Overhead Series and The Shoulders Closed Series.

Here is a brief explanation of some of the 3x Med Ball Drills:

1) The Chest Up Med Ball Throw 3:00
2) Separation Throws 3:49
3) Lateral Drive Throws 4:56

Some things to note about the Top Velocity Med Ball Throws:

-Chest Up Elite Velocity is 40-42 mph
-Separation Throws Elite Velocity 45-47 mph (49-51 mph is super elite)
-General idea is that you should be able to double your Separation Throw Velocity to the pitching mound with a baseball.

This is big guys! Thanks for the tip! I'm 6'2 in cleats and got long arms, also I'm very wide and I'd say I'm a big guy, anyway throwing a medball/the act of throwing a medball is precisely what it takes to throw hard on the mound but you gotta work on release point boys! Let's get it! Btw I'm 31 And have been practicing the last 3 years everyday, I got a tryout in June and I hope I make it!

Hi coach madden, I’ve been trying these medicine ball drills but I’ve been experiencing some pain on my left groin/hamstring area (I’m a RHP) each time I do them and it makes it difficult to complete the drill. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Thanks, I love the video and the reasoning behind it. I would like to iterate the vital importance of visualization of our pitching mechanics and how it reduces our wear and tear on our arms as we increase our skills.. If we have the feeling and sight (visualization)of performing an action, then to our brains it is performing that action by firing up our neurons and connecting to other neurons as if are actually throwing a ball with no wear and tear, with out gear, field, space etc... we can hold a glove or ball to increase our sense.

We can do this at night before we sleep and when we wake up that way we ensure the subconscious baseball animal comes out in us to dominate on the field.

Thanks again for these drills, I will be using these in my coaching program for my players.

Does anyone know the proper hand placement on the ball to throw these? I've slowed down some guys to try and get a look, and on separation throws so many of them end up throwing the ball with 1 hand from behind the ball. I don;t think this is what Brent intended. Or maybe he did. Any advise would be cool. Thanks!!
