You’ll never contaminate your apartment with lead solder, technically the solder never gets hot enough to actually evaporate, it just melts! The vapors are just from your flux

Another tip would be: it’s not the solder that harms, it is the fumes from the Flux. Also, after soldering, washing with dish soap, sprinkle piece with baking soda, scrub with toothbrush to remove all flux residue. Do not let your piece sit overnight without removing flux. I recommend ARYyRV YouTube channel (stained glass artists for 40+yrs) to learn best practices for a beginner. They helped me immensely over the last few years!

I’m also a beginner with stained glass and using lead free solder! It looks like your soldering iron is hot enough which would be my first tip. I also find it easier to work in one area making it as neat as possible before moving onto the next instead of focusing on the whole piece at once. I’m not sure if that makes sense but it keeps the solder from cooling and heating too many times

Im new at stained glass too. One thing I would say is when you are tacking all the pieces together, dont melt and drops blob of solder down like in this video. Im not sure if this was just for the video but any time the solder blobs drop onto the glass, you are increasing a risk of cracking the glass. Instead, grab a piece of solder and tap it where you want it to go. Lower the temperature on the iron if you arent able to hold the blob long enough to tap it in place. Or mover your solder closer to the copper foil and drop the blobs right over it if you that for the video.

Tips for improving your sodering:
-Whenever you put your iron down, wait 2 to 4 seconds with it touching the soder bur not moving, and only then do you move. It will melt the pre-existing soder and it will make a more seamless touch!

-try to keep the same "volume" of material everywhere. Not too little, you shouldnt see the lines of the gap between the glass pieces and its better to have something that has quite a bit of volume, quite round, but it will look off if you put too much. If you already have too much matter on your seam on your soldering, you can try to take off a bit either by extending it to somezhere else, or my master often put his iron down on the soder a few seconds before taking it off and shaking in the direction of a safe surface where it can drop, and repeat it how many times you need!

-to keep your soldering round, it's nice to tilt the head of the iron a little to the side so that it doesn't lay flat, and so it forms the rounder shape directly!

-when working on the back, move quickly from one place to another, try not to work in the same area for too long or it might melt the front!
If the front melts, you can re-touch it but I'd advise to wait a while before doing so, for it to cool down to have less risks of melting it thought the back again!

I'm taking my first stained glass class this semester and it's such a challenging process, but I'm trying to stay motivated and keep learning. I love my class and the people in it are super helpful! Your work is very stunning and you're also so beautiful, keep up the good work and can't wait to see the end results! 🙆🏻‍♀️✨

I just wanted to pass on something I learned from a scientost about lead! Apparently lead is only toxic if you ingest it, and also lead vapour is toxic, but lead does not vapourise until a much higher temperature is reached than what can be reached with a soldering iron. So all in all stained glass should be a safe practice with no risk of lead poisoning! Hope this helps :)

Hi darling, stunning work and good luck with learning! It might be different where you are, but in American English solder is pronounced like “sodder”

My tip would be that all that tape is not necessary as there are push pins to use to stabilize your piece. Just “tack” the joints together on one side, then flip and tack on bottom side.

A heat gun on high with make the solder more uniformed

It's so beautiful!! I have no tips on the craft, but one for your English.

The L in solder is not pronounced. It sounds more like "saw-der" when you say it out loud ❤
