I felt everything you said. Nursing has changed so much. I used to love going to work. Then came politics/ computer work and less time for patients. I miss the old nursing when you could care for your patients and go home feeling like you made a difference, instead of wondering if you completed all your charting.

Nursing is a thankless, demanding and high liability job. So glad to be retiring soon.

Nobody should work on their feet for 12 hours… this is just the beginning of nurses leaving tragedy.

The worst part of nursing is other nurses. Some of them are just miserable bullies.

When I had my first panic attack it was a black nurse that held me in her arms and rocked me back and forth until I told her what was wrong 😭 I will never forget MsRose. I’m sure there are patients that haven’t forgot you too. We need good nurses.I know you have to do what’s best for you but I hope you find something better. I know it’s hard and I understand🙏🏽

I quit my my job as an RN last two years ago after almost 16 years in the field. It was not an easy decision, but life is too short to dread going to work everyday. No amount of money can buy real happiness, but friends I'm not asking you to resign from your job or abandon your business but be wise!

What is crazy is, my wife has only been nursing since last spring. She has talked about the lack of empathy, and how much she hates bedside because of it. She lovvvvesss helping her patients. So, you are making complete sense to me. It only took her less than a year to realize that it’s not worth her mental health. She’s looking daily for something fulfilling outside of bedside. Pray for us as we pray for you! 💕

We all feel the same. I don’t even tell people I’m a nurse. I just get in and get out. Erase my memory and act like it never happened. I dread coming in even the entire day prior to going in. Looking for an exit plan everyday.

When I was in labor…I was basically alone. My only friend and advocate was my nurse. She spoke up for me when I was in pain, told the doctor what I wanted and completely helped me feel safe and cared for when I had no one else. I told her how much I appreciated her for everything she did for me and I could tell that it meant a lot to here those words. I thank God for her and ALL caring nurses

This is why I've been a hospice nurse for the last 10 years of my career, working in an inpatient unit for the past 3 yrs. Hospice is the closest thing to actual nursing you will ever find. I have the time to sit with patients/families and listen, or educate them, without feeling rushed. I'm actually caring for people, not just doing tasks and charting. The charting still sucks but it's not as bad, and we still have paper MARS and no pixis, it's wonderful!

I think the way you’re feeling is becoming increasingly common among all the “helping” fields. Nurse, teachers, social workers, therapist…people are burning out. I think this says so much about our society from the people down to the systems that are put in place.

I hear you. Just put in my 30-day notice. I’m getting out of the game for good. Going to nursing school was the worst decision of my life. They have to pay a high wage for a good reason...it’s a horrible job. And they take their pound of flesh for their money. Being surrounded by a-holes every shift (patients, families, doctors, other nurses, admin, etc) has just become not worth it.

I have been a nurse for 17 years and left bedside nursing 9 years ago because I could not care for my patients in a way that I felt was safe. We were constantly staffed 1 RN to 8-9 patients on evening shift. This was on a very busy acute medicine unit. I left every day wondering what mistake I had made. I felt guilty at first, leaving patient care, but it was the best thing I could do for my mental health. I dreaded going to work everyday just like you said.

If nothing changes, there will become a day when there truly aren’t enough nurses to keep all of these hospitals open. Access to healthcare in this country will suffer greatly.

I agree 100% The hospital will break you, then blame you for being broken.

I'm retired now. I left nursing when I could still do it but I was so miserable because I cared, I always cared, I still care, and I felt like no one else did. So I quit and became a glass artist and loved it because I could create beauty after all the ugliness. If you are a nurse with ethics it's hard, it just is. I still love people, I still care for my family and always will. It's sad that the healthcare system is systematically killing off compassion for $$$.

As a current nursing student, I can already say I hate nursing and I haven’t even started. Just the mental, physical, and emotional burden it’s put on me from the stuff I’ve seen and dealt with in clinicals and the fact that several professors seem to take pride in failing students out, I’m just exhausted. I love people and want to help but I have looked into other areas where I can help people that’s not nursing. Prayers for you!!❤️

I feel every bit of what you are saying. I’ve been a nurse 25 years and I think the lack of empathy stems from the lean staffing that existed before the overwhelming exodus of nurses from the field. It highlights management’s inability to look beyond how it’s going to impact staffing. It’s a shame really. I left the bedside 6 years ago (NICU FOR 17 years) and I don’t regret it one bit. While I miss helping patients and the adrenaline rush of critical care I enjoy not working weekends, holidays or begging for PTO more. You’d literally have to drag me back kicking and screaming. I work from home, make more money and in a less direct way I am still actually helping patients. It’s a win win. Don’t feel bad you have to make career decisions that work for you, your health and family.

Agree with you sis. I am a fellow RN. I really used to enjoy nursing. These last 15 years or so, the politics, the BULLYING has made it so miserable. Thank you for this chat.❤

I was a nursing assistant and I got a sour taste for nursing at that point. I got into Respiratory therapy and on my way to becoming a PA and it’s the best decision I ever made 😊
