Reference and study movie scenes instead. You get lighting, composition, expressions in one still image.

People are too obsessed with drawing pretty and boring stuff.

Go out of your comfort zone. Draw old people with a lot of expression. Draw some guy with a half burned face, anything! Get out of your comfort zone. I get that it's natural for us humans to lean towards drawing pretty and sexy people but there's more out there that exists then just lame 0 expression Pinterest models. Not practicing drawing something like a 47 year old guy that's yelling and other expressive more humanized non edited examples can hold you back in the future.

Totally agree with the fact that these references are boring to DRAW. But... I’ve found that they’re great painting references. They have been useful for me in learning how to mix my colors and paint skin tones. The lighting is always good, the hair and make up colors can freshen up my palette, and there can be some fun design elements to try out.

I don’t think I would ever post my studies of these models to Instagram, since I don’t want to go through the effort of giving image credit 😂

Reference Idea I got from my teacher a long time ago was to also look at sports players on youtube and pause on the players expressions. You will get more genuine expressions of anger, happiness, confusion, and frustration, . Basketball, soccer and tennis in my opinion have the best ones lol

For anyone who wants to do figure studies, here are some great resources I''ve found. Even if you think it's the same thing, you can learn a lot from learning from one particular thing!

Figure Drawing References (IDK if links are allowed):
- Sketch Daily
- Love Life Drawing
- Quick Poses

Happy drawing!

What i like to do to to get references for expressive faces is pause videos on intense scenes and just take a screen shot of it. Hahah.

I have thousands upon thousands of reference photos I want to draw, a few hundreds even taken by and of myself- and then I get around drawing like 1% of them lol

You should watch the Prince Of Egypt - its animation style is a masterclass in stylized faces that still incorporate the tiny details that make an expression

Kim Taehyung is a very photogenic celebrity with tons of powerful expressions that i think he will be perfect for this. Of course he has a lot of pictures where his face is generic for the sake of photoshoots but hes genuinely an expressive person especially in MVs and performances.

hi, just stopping in to say that I first watched your 2 videos about Pinterest girls and I loved every point you made. I then followed your Pinterest boards and began drawing actual people and not just same-faced Pinterest girls, and I have never been happier. I have been able to fill pages after pages in my sketchbook with real looking people. And I thank you for that. I truly appreciate you and what you have done for me . Thank you

Okay so I'm a fulltime Character Designer, and just found your channel today. I absolutely LOVE these videos and they're really informative in a way that most other channels don't really touch on. Thank you for your amazing content! I was looking for something on how to gather resources, but it's really odd/broad to ask someone "how do you find reference"? Thanks for putting this out there! :)

You just helped me take my drawings on the next level. Because I was so frustrated and stuck in a rut. When you said it, it became so clear to me: expression. That's what I want. I want my character to MOVE in space and to show emotions and to stay recognizable.
Started following you on pinterest. I'm Nora. So happy to discover your boards there, cause that's where I keep all my drawing stuff.

i actually began sketching just some outrageous expression while listening to this video and its part one. have to say, with all the cringing, furrowing, and scrunching ive done for reference using a mirror, this might not only be a good drawing exercise, but a facial exercise as well. 🤪
