I adore this piece! Such a vivid imagery and poetry. Your superb performance clearly reminds us mortals that great pianists have a fully established technical ability and musical sensibility by age 13. Thank you for this painful lesson… just kidding; half kidding!

When I was 16, Barry Douglas won the Tchaikovsky Competition with his performance of this sealing the deal, I believe. I just remember music critics raving about it. I also found out he went to the gym to train his arms and upper body, which was unheard of at the time. I believe the understanding of the mechanics of playing the piano changed a lot since then.

Did your growing up as a Ukrainian bring you closer to the soundscape of this suite? I just came across Lili Kraus’ performance of Romanian Folk Dance by Bartok and was mesmerized by the unique rhythmic sways and melancholy tone. Cultural heritage must affect the execution. I was surprised as I had only known her from her Mozart Sonatas. She was half Romanian!
