It's NOT mud. Mud is not compressible. It is 2 parts sand to one part clay (7% Portland cement can be added for extra strength) and a very little bit of water so that it all holds together.

In Sudan we use almost a similar method. We just don't ram the mud but we do it by hand in one feet level. Once the level is dry in about 2 days then comes the next level until you reach the required level & then cover it, smoth the whole structure, paint it & enjoy the coolness in summer & warmth in winter😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

It's not only mud. There is a medium within the mud like straw. They make these mud horses in the Midwest all the time. I'm the Appalachian Mountains, they use things like hog and horse hair and straw. Keeps warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Really sturdy when set fully.

This style is alive and well in the southwest US. The thick walls cut out most traffic noises, barking dogs, etc., and the R factor is fabulous!!!

I had a rammed earth building business in Western Australia. We would put cement with the earth to stabilize it making it strong as concrete and able to stand up to rain with no effect.

We use to live in Iran in the 70's, they make houses there up to 3 or 4 floors high with mud, hay and wood.

In my village, it's the same
As is in another comment, these huts are so cool. The surroundings are scorching hot, but the sand floor is quite cool. The slightly raised thatched roof contributes to the cooling effect.

This video shows china. But in Uzbekistan, some countryside people still build houses from mud which keeps the house hot in winter and cold in summer. If the mud contains less salt the house will be like a concrete built house

Nothing special we have houses like that in north Serbia older than 100 years, like mine.

Mud houses are best in hot and humid region as temp will always be cool inside the house. Issue with mud houses is yearly maintenance. Lot of manpower is needed to ensure to fill the cracks and keep it stable.

Abagusii people in Kenya built traditional houses this way. My parents first house in the village was built this way. It was so hard to demolish.

It doesn't mean it is sturdy just because it hasn't fallen down yet.
