This is genuinely a baffling stance.

The problem is that gamers are tired of half completed over monetized trash. Years ago, I pre ordered games, wanted to support developers I liked, and was willing to take a chance on a new game. Now I wait till a game is out, pick it up used when I can, wait for reviews to let me know that the game is moderately functional. I spend as little as possible. The trust is completely gone and the game companies have earned that distrust.

Starfield isn't going to make people give up their ps5.
But repeatedly bad games will make people give up their xbox.

Who would’ve thought that the good ol’ “release now, fix later” strategy would piss gamers off! No one could’ve foreseen this after the millionth time 🤔

This kind of mentality actually explains the state of the industry perfectly.

Its not about pushing video games anymore, its about pushing sales and as long as you can make appealing advertising the actual end result of the product is irrelevant.

He says nothing Xbox produces will make people sell their PlayStations for Xbox. That’s true, but continuing to produce crap WILL make people sell their Xboxes for PlayStation.

Ask Stadia if a platform without great games is a good idea.

You can tell that Activision deal getting shut down really hit him hard. The guy's flat-out doomposting.

This is what happens when you stop making a product for the people who consume it and instead make the products to attract investors.

phil - "We've lost the console war because we didn't build a quality library of games, so heading into the future we think starting the process of building a great library for our users won't help us at all. Instead, we will just buy developers that have an audience already"

*Microsoft:* _~goes on massive spending spree to acquire game studios and IPs~_
*Phil Spencer:* Great games aren't going to help us
*Microsoft & Investors:* I'm sorry, what?

With the state of Redfall and Activision deal, Phil Spencer seems to be going through the 5 stages of grief.

As someone who works in business, this is such a corporate mindset. Basically, they want something unobtainable so they just give up instead of giving people what they have been asking for.

Imagine having the financial strength of Microsoft, and not being able to take that strength, and convert that into building incredible games.

"There is no world where we have an obligation to the people who bought our console to provide them with solid and at least functional gaming experience for 70+ dollars. After all, the suckers already bought it." - Phil Spencer

Phil's comments just scream, "Don't expect starfield to be good"

This is the equivalent of a movie theater saying “you know movies don’t sell tickets”

Phil would be surprised if he learned that quality means a lot to players, and selling broken or mediocre products aren't going to cut it.

microsoft does this quite often. they realize it would take effort and time to turn around a downward trend and they choose to either change the narrative to imply theyre competing else where. or they give up and only make a token effort in turning around that downward trend.

They used to call games system/console-sellers… they weren’t called that for nothing. Also Xbox used to be neck and neck with PlayStation during the 360 days when it came to sales yet Spencer sounds like there is no hope in catching up to PlayStation and Nintendo… truly unbelievable.
