In 1941, Rev. James H. Dolan, S.J., Provincial for the New England Province of the Society of Jesus, received written permission from Bishop Maurice McAuliffe of the Hartford Archdiocese to establish a Jesuit high school and college in the Bridgeport area of Connecticut.
“Kindly accept my immediate acknowledgement of Your Excellency's communication… regarding the founding of a School by the New England Province of the Society of Jesus in the Bridgeport area… I note with pleasure that in confirming the invitation to establish a high school, Your Excellency extends the favor… to include the founding of a college in the same area. Your expression of the cordial wish for every success in our efforts to build up a strong center of education at the new foundation is deeply appreciated.”
– Rev. James H. Dolan, S.J., in a letter to Bishop Maurice McAuliffe, September 16, 1941
