Great Explanation. A Physics Teacher myself, this is a very common mistake in many Indian textbooks (saying that it's TIR). Another argument could be if it is TIR the clarity of a Rainbow would be much better! (Hence proved ad absurdum)

Thanks Verma Ji for being the leading light in our lives

Sir, though we have conveniently taken the raindrop as a sphere, they are not perfectly spherical in real life so we might or may have total internal reflection since the angles inside the drop need not be equal

Sir this concept is present in your book-

Respected sir,
If we consider a stationary spherical water droplet air then your great explanation definitely holds true and I totally agree with you. But as we know that these tiny droplet move in the air but the rainbow seems to be stationary. Why? Is it because the droplets are constantly being replaced by other droplets? Also don't the droplets constantly keep changing their shape due to surface tension and the continuous changes in the atmosphere? Then shouldn't the rainbow be spread all over the place rather than having the shape it has?

Thanking you
A Science student

Sir, but in your book concepts of Physics, you write.. total internal reflection takes place in the formation of rainbow.
