WHERE IS THE LOVE? Second thoughts about the Nikon Z9.

I'm still undecided about the Nikon Z9. I need to know whether the benefits of technology and personal recognition can justify the cost of this game changer.

I started doing POV photography due to the current climate of social distancing. The clips in this video were taken in Kylde Warren Park in Dallas Texas.

I am a returning professional event/candid photographer (left the biz 10 years ago). Have had Minoltas and moved to Nikons. D100, D300, D700, Z6II and ordered awaiting Z9. The autofocus is the number one reason for investing in this new camera. My Z6II can cover most (70-80%) of the assigned tasks but it is the missed candids, missed moments, missed nature shots and crops that I want. Almost went for Z7II but low light of Z6II sold me on fewer pixels. The Z9 has all the capabilities that I want with the only drawback being size. Since this is a flagship platform, the other plus is supportability by Nikon and the community. This cannot be understated for smaller biz professionals needing support in service, settings and tribal knowledge. I also intend to use the Z9 in my aviation adventures, weather sealing and connectivity are pluses. Keep shooting and sharing, thanks for the channel. Cheers!!

Von, received the Z9 last week and have some initial thoughts. First, great ergonomics, features (capabilities) and bigger than first thought. Yes, weight in line with prior flagships Dx but size is smaller. Did some walking tours to test usability for POV use and while bigger than Z6II, not too intrusive. Noise is non-factor and size obscured when holding since left hand and forearm support bottom of camera from subject view. Overall, the Z9 is the Z6II+++, meaning that the Z9 capabilities include mirrorless baseline capabilities and adds computational abilities. There literally is a top line computer inside the Z9 and its fast, accurate and supporting. From the autofocus, to the application of settings, to the in-camera HDR, focus shifting, 4k120, 8K60 (which i dont need/use), mechanical shutterless and bank storage of settings, the Z9 is the next step in the evolution of mirrorless. It is not perfect for all applications but it is a do-it-all camera. I am a returning professional but don't not rely on photo engagements for sole income. My recommendation, two thumbs way up, your experience with previous Dx series and use of settings for creative expression mean the Z9 will satisfy your mission and provide years of utility. I would love to have a Z8 with flow down capabilities of the Z9 but realistically, any shrinking of size and weight will be a tradeoff of current Z9 capabilities and thus limiting. Jump in, the water is fine and you will love it despite the weight issue.😃

For pros, they need to consider the business cases, but I don't as an enthusiast. Pre-ordered mine and size & weight is normal for me, since I had used F2A + MD + BP as my first SLR four decades ago and a D3 since 2008. Sure, for non primary uses, a compact & lighter model such as my FE2, D300 & Z6 are adequate.

IMO, people use technology differently. For some, it is merely for the faster & easier benefits while others may be able to do things they have wished to do. However, there is also a small group of people that will push the envelope beyond what the majority are practicing. Thus, it will be similar to three blind men and an elephant when one is describing how the Z9 can benefit them.

For instance, one of the first things I like to check out is how the Waveform for video can benefit photography, instead of using the histogram. I also want to know is pre-release capture the real 'spray & pray', a feature to avoid missing the decisive moments or offering other benefits?

There are plenty of videos available now (as of 01/19/22) by a huge variety of people, showing what the Z9 is, in the hands of many different types of photographers. And, the manual is downloadable from the Nikon site, so no one should have any major questions about the stated specs. (I've pre-ordered one, but my thing is landscape, wildlife, and aviation, so the new features of the Z9 can really elevate my work, and get me shots I wouldn't be totally confident in getting, with my Z6II.) If your main thing is street photography, the Z6, Z7, Z6II and Z7II are plenty of camera for that. They can also shoot in silent mode. Just remember that to get the stated max performance with the Z9, you're going to have to invest in several hundred dollars (at least) for the fast CF Type B cards. If you're going to shoot video with it too, then you'll need something like a 512 GB Delkin Black card. I just bought one, getting ready for my Z9, and it was $700. But, regardless of the "facts", if you want one, get it! If you're not happy with it after some time experimenting, you certainly won't have any trouble selling it, this year. :)
