Tulane University is investigating a student over an op-ed that expressed support for Kanye West, saying it “caused much distress” on campus.

Student Sarah Ma’s opinion piece in the College Dissident argues that West should not have been “canceled” for wearing a jacket reading “White Lives Matter” and saying he was going to go “death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE.”

“Ye Did Nothing Wrong,” Ma’s headline read. The next day, Tulane announced in an email to the student body that its Office of Student Conduct was reviewing the matter.

FIRE wrote Tulane to urge the university to immediately drop its investigation because Ma’s comments — however offensive to some — are fully protected by Tulane’s commitment to freedom of expression. Words that impact Tulane’s community can certainly elicit criticism, including from the university itself. But per Tulane policy, offense alone cannot prompt an investigation into the student’s expression nor institutional punishment.

God forbid college students hear something controversial or offensive. It might even happen in life

What is it that they are exactly investigating?

Tulane is well known for being well populated by the sole group of people you are not allowed to criticize under any circumstances.
