| THE NATIONAL REMINDER | Why production and export of oil from Turkana County remains a pipedream

In July 2011 the hunt for oil began in Turkana County. British oil and gas exploration firm Tullow Oil set base at Lopii area in Turkana East to explore availability of petroleum products in the arid Kerio Valley basin. It raised hopes for Kenya to become an oil producing country. The discovery of oil in 2012 was the beginning of that journey, but now 10 years on, where are we. We tell you now on this week’s National Reminder.

Good work, i have always wanted to know what happens behind the curtains. This oil production topic have left many Kenyans in the dark.

It is so sad to see countries like Kenya drag their feet on such vitally important projects. Energy projects require commitment and momentum to keep on track. A lot of needless criticism of Tullow which as a small independent has a very good reputation operating fairly in Africa only causes problems. Governments making unreasonable demands and quibbling for political posturing just end up isolating the engineering companies that have put so much risk capital at stake only to see years of delays for no good reason and good equipment rotting away on site while politicans play silly games.

Have been waiting for this. If we had someone as Kibaki in the last ten years... Petrol would be costing kenyans 20 shillings at the moment

Pray to God for having given you a life to live so that you can see the drama and wonders humans can do, we are working really hard to export oil and working even harder to import it at a higher price and we are really interested in the lives of our citizen that is african nations for you ... kenya is just joining Nigeria..

Nigeria is #1 producer of oil in Africa & look at how deplorable their state is. USA has one of the largest oil reserves but they still import oil from Russia. So politics is a huge factor in determining a country's success in oil exploration.

The County's same basin, is also believed to have water. No much interest in exploring that avenue, why?

The delay is they're trying to figure out how to get the oil through corrupt systems to no benefit of Kenyan citizens.

Do our leaders know how much most of the resourceless European countries wish these resources was available in their countries and how foolish they consider us to be as they create crisis when we discover resources.

Revive our Changamwe refinery or build a new refinery in Turkana inconjuction with tullow or fairly by them out and let us be energy independent for at least a few decades.

Why cant we just refine it locally and sell it locally to quench our oil shortage
