The Punic Sicilian Wars are often forgotten despite being among the longest and most brutal conflicts of the era. Fascinatingly they give us a glimpse of Carthage in action years before their showdown with the Romans in the Punic Wars.

You can learn more about the armies of Carthage through our Units of History episodes:

The Hannibal who crossed the Alps with elephants was Hannibal Barca, this was a different Hannibal

No wonder the Greeks never fully trusted the Carthaginians it seems, despite the fact that Hannibal Barca (not this one) was apparently very fond of Greek culture (Pyrrhus and Alexander were also the two greatest generals in his eyes)

I want to say thank you for appropriately focusing on the horror of the result of the fighting. Often I feel we get too stuck on the fancy battles and motives of the soldiers to consider what happens to the people after or during.

Hannibal Mago 😡: “I have come to avenge my grandfather.”
Random Selinian mother 😭: “I don’t even know who you are!”

Wow now I’ll have nightmares about being a regular old person in a city that happened to fall in war in the old days 🙁

You should have given this another title. Everyone automatically thinks of Hannibal Barca when they hear the name Hannibal (for good reason). It's a misleading title.

Still an interesting video though.

"Raped, executed and sold into slavery"
So who was buying dead slaves?!? Seems like that would be a niche market

“All who survived were raped, executed, and sold into slavery…”

It is grammatically correct to swap “and” to “OR” in that sentence! As I'm sure that, Carthaginian slavers did not want dead, raped corpse's!
