Yes indeed, Archaeology does often deal with the detritus of ancient societies however the old (slightly cynical) joke about unclassified objects being immediately classed as ritualistic holds less water now than it did.

I had a professor (cultural anthropologist) who described the practice of archeology as sifting ancient peoples' trash dumps. I found that there was some truth in that.
He also observed that his colleagues tended to classify any artifacts they couldn't immediately understand as "religious objects."
