Capybaras are actually found in every South American country...except Chile. So sadly, Chile isn't based (though I guess they make up for it for being the home of the chinchilla). Capybaras bathing in hot baths in Japan is not only cute, it's also healthy for them. Since they are of course native to South America, they are not adapted to the Japanese climate and their skin dries out in winter. There is a study that concludes that the warm onsen baths improves the skin of the capybaras in winter and helps them relax. Also, a video has surfaced of a capybara drinking mate, so it's not just the food that makes them chill but also the DRINKS! And Colombia, Venezuela, and Panama have their own species of capybara called the lesser capybara

An extremely based thing capybaras have done: Taking back their land from the elite. Nordelta is Argentina’s most well-known gated community, surrounded by a dreamy landscape of lakes and streams north of Buenos Aires. But it was built on the wetlands of the Paraná, the second most important river in South America after the Amazon. And Nordelta has changed the natural drainage systems provided by the wetlands and regularly causes flooding in the surrounding communities. Well, nature has fought back on behalf of the common people. The community was rightfully invaded by capybaras, reclaiming their home. Destroying manicured lawns, bitten dogs and caused traffic accidents.

Its common name is derived from the Tupi word (an extinct language from Brazil) ka'apiûara, which means "one who eats slender leaves". The Catholic Church once said that the capybara could be eaten for Lent as the church classified them as fish since they're semi-aquatic. A similar exception was also applied to beavers and muskrats.
