After obsessively watching this for the past few days (because holy hell this slaps), I’m wondering if there’s any symbolism with where exactly the speaker’s looking. When her eyes aren’t covered by her bangs, that is. Maybe with her new satanist powers she can give herself a haircut.
(using she/her for the speaker since she refers to herself as a girl/woman repeatedly)
All throughout the first verse, she’s staring upwards over the camera's line of sight, rather than at the viewer like she’s addressing them. At 0:38 she could be just invoking the Lord’s name, but she might be addressing the Lord for the entire first verse, which entails calling him beastly and directly declaring to his face that she wants to be a sinner. This makes the prechorus and chorus really interesting: she’s still not powerful enough to usurp God (as she’s still looking upwards to him as she demands prayer), but is ballsy enough to blatantly insult him and basically put herself in his place nevertheless.
Second verse, a slight change in dynamic — they’re on equal footing until the chorus, she’s dragged the focus of her ire down to her level. The lines themselves make me doubt the whole “the addressee is God” idea, since why would the guy who made Christianity a thing want to grasp a rosary and Hail Mary? So maybe she’s speaking to a corrupt priest she’s taking down or something, but I’m getting off track now. By the chorus, she’s floating slightly above & looking down at the viewer, again changing the dynamic and showing her power growing.
I assume that the next scene, which completely changes the background + camera angles + outfit of the speaker, is a flashback of some kind. She’s groveling up at God again as a lowly mortal woman, but doesn’t seem submissive whatsoever: she knows she has sinned and is confessing, but not as an admission of guilt, almost like she’s proud of herself. Another side tangent: I love how her lines solidify that this whole “embracing the dark side” idea is her conscious choice. Rather than pursuing healing or a solution to whatever problems that may have driven her down this path, she actively shirks any practical, healthy solutions in favor of hunting down power instead, because that’s what makes her feel GOOD. We stan problematic women ❤️
In the last shot, uh… she apparently sold her pupils to the devil for epic, heavy metal blood eyes, so it’s kind of hard to tell where exactly she’s looking. She’s floating quite high now, though, so I think it’s fair to say she’s probably looking down at the viewer from a strong angle. She’s accrued enough power to fully put herself in God’s place as a kind of fallen angel, once again demanding all of the addressee’s faith go to her. This is her church now.
Hope this ramble was interesting to read. Could have gone on for longer (like it’s not coherent yet, but I have Thoughts about how often she mentions her body/figure as an object of worship), but I figured this is already pretty lengthy for a YouTube comment.
