Hi friends,

Learn a Language Smart - that's what I called the videos where I give advice on how to learn a language.
How to learn a new language, how to learn a language fast, how to learn another language: all these questions arose in my head too when I started learning a new language.
Most people wonder how to learn another language fast, because nobody likes wasting their time.

I'm happy to give you tips on how to study a new language, based on my own language learning experience.
This is the first video on what language immersion is, why language immersion works, how you can use comprehensible input to your benefit and most importantly how to learn any language in the natural way with no stress.

The channel immersive Ukrainian wHanna is dedicated first of all to learning the Ukrainian language but the series Learn a Language Smart is broader and gives answers to questions like "how can i learn a new language", "how can i learn a language fast" and "how do we learn a language".

I hope you find the answer to your question!
Language immersion will work for you too if you make it right!
Feel free to write comments, like the video and of course subscribe for more.

Babies seem to learn languages more effortlessly and rapidly than adults, and this phenomenon can be attributed to a combination of neurological, cognitive, and social factors. Here are some key reasons why babies appear to excel in language acquisition compared to adults:

Neuroplasticity: Babies' brains are highly plastic, meaning they are capable of forming and reorganizing synaptic connections. This makes it easier for them to adapt to new information, including language. As people age, the brain becomes less plastic, and it becomes more challenging to acquire new languages.

Critical Period Hypothesis: Linguist Eric Lenneberg proposed the Critical Period Hypothesis, suggesting that there is a critical period during which language acquisition is most effective. This period is thought to extend from infancy to early adolescence. Babies, therefore, may be more adept at learning languages because they are within this critical period.

Social Interaction: Babies learn language in a social context. They are surrounded by caregivers and family members who constantly communicate with them. Social interaction is crucial for language development, and babies are immersed in language-rich environments. They learn not just from direct instruction but also from observing and participating in conversations.

Imitation: Babies are exceptional imitators. They mimic the sounds, intonations, and facial expressions they observe in their caregivers. This helps them internalize the patterns and structures of their native language. Adults, on the other hand, might feel more self-conscious or may rely on explicit learning strategies that can be less effective for language acquisition.

No Fear of Making Mistakes: Babies are not afraid of making mistakes. They experiment with sounds and words without the fear of judgment. This willingness to try and fail is an important aspect of language learning. Adults, on the other hand, may feel self-conscious or worried about making errors, which can hinder language acquisition.

Single-minded Focus: Babies are often singularly focused on language acquisition during the early years of their lives. This intense focus, combined with their curiosity and the absence of competing priorities, contributes to their rapid language development.

I'm a little surprised you don't have more subscribers, you have great content and advice.

I've started/stopped learning a few times simply due to time constraints of adult life and work. For me, it's simply out of pure curiosity, I don't have any specific need or even access to a native speaker. That's no reason to not continue learning though! I'll keep watching, and go through your back catalog of videos.

I love subtitles because it connects words people speak with words you actually know, but you have to follow it really good and follow what is happening in content you are watching, also you hear original language and there are no situations where Brad Pitt speaks German or one Polish guy does all the voices in a Movie.
For me that is immersion, yes languages need to be at least a bit simillar, i watched many Korean shows and never connected words and meanings, Japanese anime also and picked up only stuff like Arigato Gozaimasu as Thank you and few other words, but with English, Italian, Spanish, German or most European languages that are closer to my own language things get easier.
As a kid Mexican telenovelas teached me Spanish, Italian was always present on tv and we could actually watch Rai even on tv antena but that is with no subtitles, German was always present in our language and we had relatives living in Germany, English was almost like native language since half of my close relatives lives in USA and there was always movies on tv.

Now with Slavic languages it was more a curiosity of similarity where you don't know it exists, i would love to understand them all but sometimes that similarity is confusing, for example some words are simillar but sound different, or mean different things so for example the famous Czech "Kureci" for Chicken is not something you want to say in Croatia and Ukranian "Pohano" which is actually word related to "Pogano" which means "Bad, Evil, and simillar stuff" actually means meat or vegetabes friyed on oil but before that you put bread crumbs on it or as we say "Pohaš meso ili Tikvice pa je to Pohano"

Anyway i already wrote to much and don't want to be boring, so keep the good work and people will be interested.

I am Dutch and I wanted to learn Oekrainian, because I want to learn a slavic language. The cases (expept nominative) are discouraging, but I deceided just to listen, learn a bit about how cases work, but mostly look for simple sentences and learn them by hart and apply them, like "I am going to brush my teeth" and the actually doing that. Sometimes/weekly I meet with someone here who is from Ukraine, so she can correct me :) Thanks for your videos!

Thanks Hanna! That's good advice. It is satisfying when I can hear someone speaking Ukrainian and understand them. On the other hand, it can be discouraging to hear something and not understand any of it. Like you said, it takes time. I just have to be patient and keep working. Your channel is a great asset. I am glad to have found you. Thanks for doing what you do.

Are you aware that you pronounce /th/ as /з/?

/th/ sounds aren’t mechanically difficult, but you must practice.
