Now you can just go to the pen on the left side of the screen (next to the footage timeline) then click where you want the line to start, hold shift then click where you want the line to end (for straight lines) then to animate them go to effect controls, Under graphics select shape 1, then under transform, unselect uniform shape, then you can adjust the length of the line with the vertical or horizontal tool. Use 2 key frames (first one at 0%) then move the keyframes closer or further away from each other if you want the line to show up faster or slower

Writeon effect is now listed in the "obsolete" effects, it may me deleted soon by Adobe - pen tool and crop may work for straight lines, but what is the alternative for e.g. a travel animation with curves and all that stuff?
