When Stephen Grappelli was about 60 he gave a solo concert at the 1930's Westcliff Pavilion built on the cliffs above the sea. I was 13. My father bought central front row seats. . As Stephan performed he walked from side to side across the stage. For his last number he stopped directly in front, and smiling hugely with direct eye contact, played just to me. The audience burst into rapturous applause and very humbly he bowed. It is a memory I treasure now fifty five years later. My heart leapt as he played and my lifelong love of music was born.

I had the great pleasure of seeing Grapelli in Sydney at the opera house who then played a duet with Nigel Kennedy. It was a wonderful surprise when he invited Kennedy onto the stage as he was not billed. But I have had Vinyl of Grappelli and Menuhin since I was about 14 years old at school. I life long love affair for me and it was Parkinson that brought these two together even more remarkable

I seem to recall that in an interview about this association, Menuhin said something on the order of, "Playing with Grappelli, I felt as though I were playing the most important notes of my life."
Two Masters.

I watched this broadcast in late ‘73 (I think it was a repeat from a year or two earlier?). As I often did back then, I recorded it onto a cassette, from the TV speaker.

Wish they were still alive. Thanks for the wonderful music.

Menuhin had to write out his part and learn it; he was unable to ad lib the way Grappelli could. Two different approaches to the instrument, but the result is pure magic.

The last time I saw someone play with Grappelli so well was Joe Venuti. I’m very glad this still exists

I remember their collaboration on tv. Hope they're still playing up there.

I remember seeing that each regarded the other as the superior violinist

There’s a lot of criticism flying about Menuhin and his improvisation but any musician in this thread knows the incredible amount of humiliation it takes to become a great musician. One never gets it “right” and there are always things to learn no matter what level one is on. Hats off to Menuhin for being willing to be vulnerable and do something on stage that isn’t his strongest skill. I’m sure he expected the critics to come for him but the need to grow was greater than others ridicule.
