It’s adjustable so instead of cutting it wrap plumbers tape, white Teflon and when you put it in the hole, you can adjust the height you want in and then pull mirror. Tape will stick easier than cutting and I would think that that’s what I used on mine and it never bottoms up.

Years ago I replaced a vintage trem bushing w/ american US reissue one. I was very careful to tighten the end of the end of the bushing w/ pliers. Problem solved. I never wanted my trem arm to lock in, but still doesnt slip out when standing and used. Kevin Shields even has his own method of using tape to not let the trem arm go deep in.

So I'm not sure what years the J. Mascis Jazzmaster had a shallower tremolo route, but I have seen this issue before...on the Fender 60s Lacquer Jazzmaster and Jaguars being produced around this same 2011-2012 era. On those, there was an additional cursed aspect, where the trem route was actually too small to accommodate an AVRI unit, so the pivoting plate would catch the inner walls of the route. Thankfully that wasn't happening here. I approached this by 'shaving' off bit by bit and checking, because using a dremel tool to cut, especially based on my measurements, would have made me cut off way too much, and likely would've resulted in the arm not having enough material left in order to still pop and lock into the collet.
So here's your heads up! If you have an earlier production Mascis and are wanting to upgrade to an AVRI tremolo unit, you might run into this.

The correct move would be to properly rout the tremolo cavity! It would be easier than ruining the trem arm, just use some mdf with straight edges lined up perfectly with the walls of the cavity, stuck down with double sided tape, measure the depth you need and rout it out with a router! Probably take about 20 minutes!

JMJM's have A tom bridge. This model is a anniversary reissue jazzmaster, no?

That’s too bad. My JM WORKS GREAT RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. STAYS IN TUNE FOR DAYS. LITERALLY.

Oddly enough, I haven’t had that problem with mine. Did you need to modify yours to fit the Mustang bridge?

That bridge tho? Did Fender change it from the Tune-o-matic?

How difficult was swapping out the ToM?

Did you try tightening the collet via the screw in the center. It should make the trem

I have one of the j mascis jazz Masters and the trem just straight up doesn't lock. Like you push it all the way in and the action on it is fine, but it doesn't click into place so it stays locked. It will just fall out if I lean forward.

I installed the fender one with screw in tremolo arm. looks and feels the same just a screw in arm and them use the teflon tape to make the arm as tight as you want it

I have a 2012 and the trem arm wont lock in. I had a 2013 before with no issues. Any suggestions?

Fender wants top dollar and yet all their guitars need work. Just add $200 to any price for set up and repairs for any brand new Fender. Honestly, Fender is a lifestyle brand now. Others provide better quality for less.
