More often than not the reason why it doesn’t land isn’t necessarily the joke but the way it was delivered, the same joke would probably be funny coming from Gervais or Chappelle because they go all on but it didn’t work here because you could feel Jo Koy holding back and then giving up at the end as if he already knew it was a lame joke. The fact he admitted that he didn’t even write his jokes and then blames the writers for why they don’t work is very telling, the best comedians write their own material and they blame nobody but themselves for why a joke doesn’t work.
