One thing that astonishes me about the letters, journals and writings of Civil War soldiers both northern and southern are the eloquence and beautifully descriptive vocabulary and phrases used. We think that everyone in the past was ignorant, yet these writing show that we, today are under educated and the truly ignorant and inarticulate ones. For all our conveniences you would think that would allow us ample time to educate ourselves and our children in the beautiful art of conversation and rhetoric. It’s long past time to revive the classical education.
