Ralph Stanley recorded this back when Larry Sparks was in the band. This comes to mind because Ralph took a mandolin break very similar to what Duffy does here. (Yes, Ralph played mandolin on his cut.) The difference is that while Duffy cross picked Ralph got a very similar effect by using a three finger roll with banjo picks.

I thought Ralph was joshing when he told me this. Until he picked up a mandolin and demonstrated it to me.

So if you’re reading this you now know a bit of bluegrass trivia that few are aware of. Or at least it was news to me.
