I’ve said this before, but Abercrombie’s prose is seriously overlooked! It doesn’t come to the forefront as often, but when it does it’s exceptional.

Not a huge fantasy fan. But the Age of Madness trilogy is genuinely one of the best books I have ever read. I love how it's more character focused and less so on world building. I definitely agree it feels more like Historical Fiction.

I really struggled with the first book and even the first trilogy with the meandering plot.

I read the first after hearing everyone everywhere gush about the first law. I thought it was meh at best. Then decided I would push through and finish the trilogy to see what all the crazies are talking about. I finished the trilogy and felt exactly the same as after I had finished the first book.

6 - 12 months later I decided to try again, felt exactly the same but this time decided to push firther with the standalone books and fell in love with "Best Served Cold", liked "The Heroes" and disliked "Red Country".

I then read through the Age of Madness trilogy and loved that.

Eventually I went back and re read the original trilogy and after falling in love with the world and characters so much I really like that too now.

In conclusion, Joe Abercrombie turned a heavy plot focused reader into someone who can enioy character focused books.

I love Joes books. WoC is my favorite of the series. I just love the mirror he holds up to humanity and the nature of power. Its grim but it is pretty realistic. Some call it bleak but i call it grey and honest. There is nothing pretty about progress.

Age of Madness is forever in my all time favourite books. So glad you finally got around to it and loved it. Everyone should read it!

It's definitely not the series for me cause I love heroic protagonists. But my husband is enjoying the first law trilogy on your recommendation. He says it really is meandering. And then he said the intrigue has reached a point that he no longer cares if there's a big plot moment. The character work is fascinating. We both DM D&D campaigns, so he gives me all the spoilers and we're taking notes.

Only read little hatred so far but was blown away at how good it is. I fell in to Jay Kristoff empire books which side tracked me from returning to Abercrombie.

I feel so strongly that she over exaggerated the idea of there being no heroic or lovable characters XD but most characters are indeed basically real people, and therefore flawed

if anyone in the comments wants another good grimdark fantasy story that has a bit of hope to its tragedy in the end, I really can't recommend The Silt Verses enough. It's an audio drama podcast but it has really high production quality (and only gets better as the seasons go on), it recently finished so it is a complete work at 46 episodes long. Also much like Joe Abercrombie, the creators Jon Ware and Muna Hussen are really good at crafting characters who are terrible people but you end up loving and caring about anyway. And maybe unlike Abercrombie, some of those characters actually become better people by the end, even though that doesn't help them escape their fates. It's a great series, so if anyone is looking for more grimdark, please check it out! Deserves way more attention that it's getting

They're so few and far between, but I love videos of people gushing about First Law/Age of Madness so much and you nailed everything great about this series. Spoiler...

The Long Eye opened in the black of night, and she saw it all.

How's the leg?

Really great breakdown. I 100% agree on the foreshadowing, Joe was just playing with us man. I'm going to re-read this series later this year/early next year, looking forward to seeing if it holds up!

Thanks for the recommendation I've never heard of this author but you made it sound so interesting I'm gonna check it out.. the only thing that sucks is I live in Germany and if you want an English version of the book Amazon can't deliver the paperback version only soft cover crap so I had to search online to get it somewhere else.. looking forward to the read..

I love this And I 100% agree with you on his character work it’s brilliant but also despicable. Though I find when authors do this outside adult and in ya / na they get hated for it…….

I have a great write style... but I haven't written anything real yet... have you written any stories?

So, I may be in a minority in that I thought the First Law trilogy was perhaps a little above average. Is Age of Madness so much better that its worth the committment? Or is it likely to be more of the same for someone like me?
