There is mesh sleeves made for gutter downspouts that are sold at places like Home Depot. Should just slip right over the stack and work fine as an arrester.

That is the proper way for exhaust pipes to be assembled. It's more important to not let any fumes come out of those pipes as the smoke goes up, then the concern of creasold dripping down the pipe.
